Douglas Randall Sylvia Sr., 83, of Cumberland, Rhode Island passed away January 18, 2022. He was a lifelong resident of Providence. He was the husband of the late Lucille M. (Wilson) Sylvia. He was son of the late Dorothy Woodward and Jack Sylvia and the youngest of 6 siblings, including Lillian Wyman, Toby Gray, Honora (Mickey) Shaw, Arlene (Porgie) Walker, Rexford (Johnboy) Sylvia whom all preceeded him. He leaves 3 sons Douglas R. Sylvia Jr, David M. Sylvia, Daniel E. Sylvia all of Providence, and 2 daughters, Susan Sylvia of Providence, and Laurie Sylvia Braxton of Connecticut. He also leaves 10 grandchildren, Christine, Lorindan, Philisha, Alexandria, and DeAnthony Sylvia. Rondale Thompson, Erica Cowan, Chelsea Knowles, Rashard McADams, and the late Michael McLean and 15 great grandchildren.
He was a veteran of the post Korean War where he was a firefighter and cook. He also was a heating/cooling technician before owning a grocery store and liquor store in his younger years. He retired after running a parking lot in Providence for 40 years. He loved Oakland Beach where he took his family almost daily to dig for clams and quahogs and taught them all to swim. A no nonsense type of man that was well known and loved by his community. He will be missed dearly. He is the example of what a loving and caring grandparent is. A memorial will be announced at a later date due to concerns of COVID.
